Chelsea Sugar Refinery Houses
Birkenhead, Auckland
The sugar refinery at Birkenhead in Auckland was built in 1884 by the Colonial Sugar Refining Co Ltd. The Manager’s House was built in 1907. The brick semi-detached houses were built in 1909 for essential staff at the refinery and replaced two rows of small timber cottages in this vicinity. The Arts and Crafts style staff houses were designed by architects for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company in Sydney. The houses are being progressively upgraded for ongoing residential use.
